Backfire is the second segment of the fifth episode in season two of Dexter's Laboratory. It first aired on August 13, 1997.
In this episode, Dexter creates an anti-matter isotope to power up the family car just in time for the road trip. However, Dee Dee goes into the car looking for her doll and ends up fusing with the car itself.
Plot
Dexter is in his laboratory creating an antimatter to power up the family car in time for the family road trip. After putting a sample of it into a test tube, Dexter goes to the garage to put some of the antimatter on the car. At first, he is interrupted by a fly perched on the hood of the car. However, Dee Dee gets into the car looking for her doll just as Dexter put a tiny drop of antimatter onto the car.
As a result, Dee Dee becomes the car and both she and Dexter go on a wild ride throughout the city. Dee Dee sees five jockeys and their racehorses and goes to the Santa Juanita Track, where she gallops along with the horses. During the race, Dee Dee spots an ice cream truck and gives chase to it. Inside, Dexter uses an invention to unscrew the car lock, but Dee Dee quickly rounds a corner, sending Dexter to the other side of the back seat and causing him to drop his invention
At a carnival, Dee Dee rides the roller coaster rails and spots Toys R We. Dexter, having had enough of the ride, convinces Dee Dee to go back home under threat of Dad telling her she won't be doing any more ballet lessons. Along the way, Dee Dee attracts the police force and they follow her back to the house. There, Mom and Dad get out of bed and prepare for the road trip just as Dee Dee pulls into the garage.
Dexter tries to tell Mom and Dad that Dee Dee is the car, but is unable to do so as he, Mom, and Dad are caught off guard by the police force. Suddenly, the car backfired three times, and Dee Dee launches out of the exhaust pipe. She, her family, the officers, jockeys, and the ice cream man all share a laugh.
