Dream Machine is the third segment of the eighth episode in season one of Dexter's Laboratory. It first aired on November 27, 1996.

In this episode, Dexter suffers from recurring nightmares to the point where they become problematic. He then has Dee Dee operate his invention, the Dream Machine, to help him have good dreams. However, Dee Dee, as a result of her being deprived of sleep, doesn't operate it properly.

Plot

Dexter is taking a test. As he prepares to do his test, he becomes confident until he sees Dee Dee writing down the formula for the space-time continuum. Low on time and frustrated, Dexter answers "Mount Rushmore" to the math question and the nightmare abruptly ends. At 3:10 AM, Dexter enters his laboratory and goes to his Dream Machine.

As he explains the procedure to Dee Dee, she nods off mid-lecture with Dexter constantly waking her up to remind her to pay attention. After explaining the lecture, Dexter lays on the bed underneath the Dream Machine and falls asleep with Dee Dee pushing down on the pedal to activate it. In Dexter's dream, he eats brain food, graduates from school, and goes to write down an equation on a large chalkboard. The dream continues with Dexter getting progressively smarter until Dee Dee appears riding on top of a unicorn. After showing that she got an "A" for writing down the purpose of meaning, Dexter rode an escalator to see the Grandfather of All Knowledge.

At the top of the volcano, the Grandfather of All Knowledge is shown to be Dee Dee, and Dexter quickly realizes that he is in another nightmare as he loses all of his knowledge, losing his clothes, being laughed at by a group of people, chased away by a giant blob monster, and laughed into a bottomless pit by multiple copies of Dee Dee. While he falls, Dexter pleads for Dee Dee to press the button on the Dream Machine's control panel, but nothing happens as Dee Dee is sleeping contently.
